Bad coolant sensor???
Will it hurt if I unplug the coolant sensor that is right underneath the two little hoses that go to the radiator?....its on a 98Z..reason was because the light with the little arrow pointing down would come on and I know the car wasn't overheating.....1.I checked the reservoir....full
2.I checked the radiator....full
3.I checked for leaks....none at all
4.I checked temp gauge....good...a little past 160, midway before the next little line...so temp is fine(160 stat)....
5.I say the sensor is bad!!!....should I replace it( $40 ).....try and clean it....or just leave it unplugged....and not worry about it?
..........input please.......

Re: Bad coolant sensor???
The coolant temperature is a vital part of many DTC's within the vehicle. The vehicle needs to know cold start, warm start, ect. I recommend replacing, look for clogging, check the wiring, ect. Have you tried reading the engine ECT with a scan tool?

Re: Bad coolant sensor???
I think he means the coolant level sensor at the top pass side of the radiator, not the coolant temperature sensor in the driver's side head.
I'm not sure how the car will react to having it unplugged...
If the "low coolant" light is staying lit up on the dash and the car is full of coolant (which I'm pretty sure is why you're asking this question) have you tried taking it out and cleaning it ?
New sensor is about $30 over the counter but should be covered under warranty if you have one.
Edit : these coolant level sensors are notorious for failing, I'm on my third one.
Happy driving,

Re: Bad coolant sensor???
I wouldn't be surprised if the coolant sensor is bad. I made mine replaced twice under warranty.

Re: Bad coolant sensor???
Mine started to act up. It would come on if the car sat for a while and I started it up. Light would stay on during the whole drive. Stopped the car, turned it off and start it up and the light is now out. Next day same thing happens. Check the coolant and it is filled perfectly. I then unplugged it and have had no issues with it unplugged. I have heard that the 01/02 cars don't even have this sensor anymore. I could be wrong but I have seen that in a few posts here. Unplug it and be done with it. You just need to check your coolant periodically instead of waiting for the idiot light to come on.

Re: Bad coolant sensor???
Thanx guys....I'll try and clean it ....the car seems to be running fine with the sensor unplugged so I'll just leave it like that until I either clean it or buy another one........
