Default Questions before purchasing LS1 Edit

Hey guys,

I am interested in perhaps purchasing LS1 Edit. I do have some questions though, perhaps you guys can help:

1. My car already has custom engine tuning. Will LS1 Edit work with a PCM that is already changed from stock settings? Or do I have to have the PCM returned to stock first (I hope not)?

2. I have absolutely no experience tuning my car (other than using a Hypertech Power Programmer at one time before getting custom tuning after a cam install). Is the LS1 editing program easy enough to use (or to learn to use) for even a "Novice" like myself? Or should I just leave my car's tuning issues in the hands of professionals?

3. Is it worth the price? I assume I will have to purchase ATAP too (along with a laptop PC - I use Macintoshes both at home & work).

If having LS1 Edit will save me time and money in the long run by not having to bring my car in every time I get an SES code, or every time my car is not running just right, then I guess it would be worth it. However, the last thing I want to do though is screw anything up, so if it is better to leave my PCM issues for the pros to take care of, then I can live with that too.

Anyway, any advice/feedback would be appreciated <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Thanks in advance,

-Bradster <img border="0" alt="[burn out]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_burnout.gif" />

It is fairly obvious that an OBD scanner rather than LS1Edit would best meet your initial requirements. There are various OBD scanners available; Autotap is the most popular amongst those who use LS1Edit for tuning. An alternative is a scanner from Ease Diagnostics. The most capable OBD scanners require a Laptop PC. Less capable scanners are available for handheld computers such as the Palm. I know of none for Macintosh. There are stand-alone scanners such as the Diablo Predator.

An OBD scanner will help you learn more about tuning. Becoming familiar with readings from your slightly modified engine will be valuable preparation for interpreting readings from a more highly modified engine. You might want to get LS1Edit later, but you need an OBD scanner first.

I think getting Autotap or a Predator first to learn how to interpret what my car is doing before purchasing LS1 Edit seems like a prudent thing to do, Gary <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I am fairly familiar with what autotap's capabilities are, but I know little about the Diablo Predator. I like the fact that it is a stand alone unit - that way I don't have to purchase a laptop to use it. Will the Autotap and/or the Predator work with a PCM that is already programmed with custom engine tuning?

I'll do a search and see what I can find about this Predator stuff.

Anyway, thanks for such a speedy reply and some good advice <img border="0" alt="[chug]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_chug.gif" />

You are very welcome. The Predator is much more capable than the Hypertech but it does not have Autotap’s ability to record data. The Predator does require an unmodified PCM as a starting point for its tuning, but that should not be a problem.
