Fairly Newbie - Dyno Procedures
I've been to a local dyno once. The outfit was new, when I got home with the printout, I noticed that he did not rev my car up to the redline (only 5200 rpm), which then makes me wonder if "we" might have missed some of the "other" procedures.
I'm in the process of installing a H/C package on my car, and obtaining a mail order tune (to get me started), and will want to go back and get dyno'd to see what increases I've got. But I want to get a fair and accurate dyno reading.
I've just bought HPTuners and will be doing some monitoring before dyno-ing. Maybe tweaking if the fuel trims need it.
Questions: When dyno-ing, do you get the car running in a specific gear and then nail the throttle to WOT up to the redline? Is there a recommended gear? At what base RPM do you go to WOT? Should I let the engine hit the rev limiter? Do you just release the throttle after reaching redline? Do I want to monitor the run with HPTuners? SHould I make use of the dyno's AFR sensor? Should I do some partial throttle runs with HPTuners scanning? If so, are there specific RPM's for part throttle runs?
THanks in advance
Dick
Is there a recommended gear? 4th (which is your 1:1)
At what base RPM do you go to WOT? 2500-3000ish
Should I let the engine hit the rev limiter? I wouldn't but some people do....
Do you just release the throttle after reaching redline? YES
Do I want to monitor the run with HPTuners? YES!
SHould I make use of the dyno's AFR sensor? This is probably the nicest part of being on a dyno.... YES! That is what you are going to value the most.
Should I do some partial throttle runs with HPTuners scanning? YES!
If so, are there specific RPM's for part throttle runs? Whatever you drive in the most...think about how you pass people, hills, etc...
The dyno is a Mustang. Brand new one. Just opened up about 3 months ago. The guys there don't do tuning (yet), just High Perf mods primarily on ricers and motorcycles. They had only dyno'd one LS1 before mine.
Funny, when we did my runs, they had the front door open. My Corsa Indy's were so loud that a whole gang came to see what was raising hell in the neighborhood. Then came the complaining neighbors.............
