Default Settle an Argument (ls1 Edit)

Hi, I have a '99Z and had brought up the idea of getting a power programer or ls1 edit to a friend of mine. He swears up and down that anytime AFTER the flash has been performed and the program has been edited battery power cannot be lost or you will lose the edited program on the flash memory and need to send the ecu in to have the stock program reloaded.
I argued that he was thinking of a different type if memory and that the flash memory in the ls1 ecu will retain the program after a powerloss.
I had never heard of this happening to the ls1 ecu so I said that I didnt think that he was right and that it seemed very illogical to have a type of memory in the ecu that would allow that to happen.
as soon as a got home I started looking around on hpertech's website and at the online manuals for it.
What do you guys think?

disconnecting the battery will not reload the factory settings but the pcm has things like short/long term fuel cells that vary to make up for the inconsistency of gas (and other things) which you will lose if you disconnect the battery.

if you want more information on how the data is stored look up EEPROM
