Default Temp Gauge Crazy

My temp gauge is acting up. It reads in the read zone and the car is not hot. I have pulled over on the side of the road several times and the engine bay is not at all hot. I am thinking its the temp sensor, what do you guys think. The inside of the car also smell like rotten water and the windshiled fogs up.

Default

1. what year car? (98s were the only accurate temp gauges, 99-02 were dummy gauges)
2. do you have access to a scanner to check what the PCM is showing?
3. how is your heat? (no location data so don't know what climate you're in)

if windshield fogs up and rotten water smell.... sounds like a blockage maybe? (possibly the heater core?)

But temp sensor is in the driver side head... so it'd be odd if a blockage of heater core and bad temp sensor occured at same time

what do you mean EXACTLY by temp gauge acting crazy? (is it fluctuating alot?)
