Default thinking about buying hptuners

ok i have been looking around and i can pretty much get hptuners for about the same price as a tune. but the closest reputable tuning shop is in alabama, thats a pretty good drive untuned. so im thinking of buying the suite and doing it myself. how hard is it to learn to tune, and decifer what all the numbers mean. i am by no means ignorant when it comes to cars, but this will be the first time i have ever messed with any kind of tuning outside of a carb.

Start here https://ls1tech.com/forums/pcm-diagnostics-tuning/287094-read-me-first-tuning-docs-ve-maf-ses-lights-faqs-more-01-31-07-a.html

Its not difficult to learn how to use hptuners as a piece of hardware & software, but learning how to tune does require a good amount of reading & you being able to filter through some of what is said on these forums as to what is & isn't true.

Of course our forum http://www.hptuners.com/forum/ is always there to help as well

do you think it is a good idea for me to try it or is it better off left to a professional?

Buy it and learn to do it yourself, it isnt very difficult to learn. Juts do a lot of reading and searching in this forum. The basics of tuning are actually quite simple such as VE, MAF, and PE. The most important part is understanding how the PCM works and how each sensor plays into the scheme of how the PCM operates.
