Default do I need a tune?

hey I have a lid/cutout/tranny cooler/3400 fuddle on my 98 auto t/a. do you guys think I should get it tuned? also this is kind of random but do you think the car is capable of 12's with decent tires? thanks

i would get a dynotune with wide band because your car is probably lean with those mods. It would aslo be good to tune the trans tables to the converter.

If your car has never been custom-tuned, a popular mod is to delete torque management to improve performance.

It is not necessary to get a tune but it would probably be a good idea. I think your car might go a high 12 with a tune and good tires.

since i dont have a heads/cam package or forced induction or anything would it be better to get a standard tune, or will just a mild one (cheaper) do the trick. also, assuming I change fan temps, shift points, remove torque management etc (basic tuning stuff) how should that affect my mpg if at all?

What does your TC stall at? Is that 3400 RPM it stalls at? An aggressively lock-up strategy for the TCC may salvage your MPG. When I went to the Edge 2800 in my car, I lost about 5 MPG around town. Sure, part of that is probably due to the LT4 conversion kit, but maybe not. Out on the highway, when the TCC can lock up, I see about 20MPG, which is all I ever saw stock.

I have some issues with my transmission now which prevent me from locking up the TCC aggressively at cruise throttle, but once I get those worked out, I expect to see better MPG.

If you got your AFR and timing optimized you might see as much as 20HP gain, maybe more. MPG may go up 1-2MPG as well.

a tuning tool is a good thing to have.
