Default Simple PCM swap question...

I need a 1998 f-body PCM to fit the painless wiring harness that I'm getting for the 69 Camaro. My car will be a 6-speed. Does it matter if I buy a 6-speed or A4 computer? Can either of them be programmed via LS1EDIT to work for the other?

Thanks
Tony

I think that it would work. You could get a stock program from a 98 and overwrite your existing program. The only thing to watch out for is to make sure your stock program and the one you are using to overwrite it have the same segment ID's. Here's a post from the email archives:

Any time you try to load a file from a different PCM, into yours, Make sure
that all of the segment ID's on the first page are the same for both files. If
they are different, Then you could create a fried PCM.

that is exactly like the one I plan to do? Is it safe? I'm assuming I
can always go back to the stock file.

If it's ok to do, does anybody have one they can email me offline?

Tony,

If you purchase a used 98 A4 PCM I would have it re-flashed with the Tech 2 with a VIN for the appropriate drivetrain and proceed with LS1Edit from there. If it was an M6 PCM to begin with you should be fine... like the above posts said just ensure the #1 segment ID is the same if you use an Edit file from another PCM.

The Segment 1 ID can be found by looking at the .LS1 file using LS1_Edit. All of the "Segment ID numbers" are shown on the left side of the screen right after you open the file. There are eight Segment ID's, numbered 1 through 8. As long as you match the Segment 1 ID of the file you want to load in with the Segment 1 ID of the file that's already in that PCM, the PCM will run fine. This is how I loaded an A4 file into my PCM when I swapped from an M6 to an A4.

98 LS1 PCM's don't use segments. You want to flash the PCM with a 98 M6 VIN. THEN use LS1 Edit to set up as needed.
