Default PCM from different "year"

Two questions...

1. I have been looking at part numbers for LS1 PCMs. Let's discuss Camaro's for example. The 1998 is its own breed, the 1999-2000 are the same AC Delco PN, and the 2001-2002 are another PN. If I had a 2002 engine and harness with the red and blue plugs, but for some reason, did not have the PCM that came with it, and I found a 2001 PCM for an LS1 Camaro with the same rear axle and transmission, would they work together without programming being required? How about if the new PCM was for a similar 2000 LS1 Camaro (different PCM PN)? I have looked at the Pins for the PCMs, and they look to be going to the same things. I know a 1998 would not work.

2. If I ordered a new PCM from GM (assume a GM crate LS1 engine is used) and had them program it with the right year, tranmission, axle, etc. program, I know that would obviously work. What VIN would be registered on the PCM? Doesn't HPTuners need a VIN for credits and such and to know what options are available for your PCM? If so, what happens and how does this all work?

Thanks.

It will work..1999-2002 Harnesses are compatible with 1999-2002 PCM's. Any combo can be done. What year is the Car you are putting the 2001 PCM into.. I assume you got something like that goin on..

It's actually going into a 1959 Apache truck. I have access to a 2002 LS1, but it has no computer. I was wanting to find a computer for it (EBAY, etc.)and was wondering if they were interchangable among years. Thanks for the reply.

I am also considering the LS6 crate engine. It uses the same PN computer and wiring harness as the 2001-2002 LS1 cars, so I am pretty sure I can find them.

If I bring my local Chevrolet dealer an old PCM, will they reprogram it, as required, for my new LS6? If so, what do they put on the PCM as the VIN for the vehicle. If I ever want to use HPTuner software, it uses the VIN on the PCM to license the PCM and determine what year, etc. the engine is for programming purposes. If it is a crate engine, how does that work out?

Ive put 2002 OS on several 99 PCMs and nothing has gone wrong, yet.

HPT has the ability to change the vin.

I think there is an other number is uses to help identify the "licenses" that have been issued besides the vin. The vin does go towards helping to address what upgrade credits and specific sensor and settings that it will be dealing with.

Under mine in the license info it list a vehicle id that is not the vin.
