LS1 edit ?

Do I need a separte labtop to run this software? What should I get to run ls1 edit and autotap?

What do you mean "separate"? More than one? Or a laptop instead of a desktop?

I have 3 laptops that I use.

But only one for AutoTap and LS1Edit (and the rest of my car software).

I just recommend that your laptop have a 9-pin RS232 serial port on it. Saves the trouble of working with a USB to RS232 adapter.
