Secruity light Yesterday after leaving the movies with my g/f i go to start my car and it acts likes it dead, but the Secruity is on. So i flip thru the car manual and it states that the problem is within the key itself, something about the prongs on the chip, and to bring it in for servicing. Today i went to the service dept. at a dealership and the guy tells me they dont service the keys they can only cut new ones for $30. He also says that it might be a bigger problem and recommended i leave it there for them to run a diagnosis on the car. The diagnosis costs $108, then whatever else could be wrong. So, did anyone else ever have this problem and what did you do, or should i just take a chance with getting a new key? TIA
Re: Secruity light The problem is in the ignition switch in the wiring that goes to the contacts for the chip in the key. The chip is just a resistor. Every key is a different resistance. The expensive fix is to replace ignition switch. The cheap fix is to pull the panel off that the rear hatch button is on. Running down the right side you will see a small white plug with 2 wires. Unplug it. Take a meter and measure the resistance of the chip in the key. To check it, place you key in the ignition switch and check the resistance accross the wires going to the ignition. Go to Radio Shack get enough resistors to add up to that. They come in packs of 4 and there is a 5% tolerance. solder them in series to add up as close as you can to the resistance of the key.
Plug it in to the plug going to the PCM. You have just bypassed the contacts in the ignition switch. It will only cost about $5.00.
