Default Gm Mdi - Sae J2524

GM has release a new scanner that is supports CAN and J1850 protocols by providing a pass-through interface (SAE J2524). The GM Tech Link states you can order them for $800 by calling 1.800.GMTools but the only problem is you have to be a dealer to buy it.
Does anyone know of another way to order this unit? The part number is EL-4795. If anyone out there is a dealer, I would be happy to pay you a commission to order one for me.
This device looks really cool if you want to develop you own software.

What is your intended use for the MDI?

The reason why I ask is because the MDI has limited functionality as of right now. Don't be in such a hurry looking for one, I don't see how its useful to anyone not in a dealership environment as of right now. I have purchased my own MDI and the only functions available on it is to reflash vehicle modules with factory calibrations (if you have access to dealerworld and TIS2Web) only. Although the wireless network function of the MDI is pretty trick, there are no scan tool functions for the MDI until model year 2009 (as I we are told). Until then, I'm still using my Tech2 w/ Candi module for scanning functions as well as the MDI for module reprogramming (only because its faster than the Tech2). For tuning I use EFIlive.

However, I have heard that there are aftermarket scan tools available out now that uses the same architecture as the MDI and has scan tool functions but retails for around $2500.00

the gm mdi also works great as a generic obd2 scan tool(for any vehicle, not just gm), im using "pcm scan" and it works fine, there are other companies that make software that will work for obd2 codes and data for the mdi also, pretty much any software that is j2534 compatable may work with the mdi unit

id get one while you can for $799,, they are already on ebay for "$2495 buy it now" and some sites are selling the bosch version for $4000

Your using aftermarket software scan software on the MDI? I'm glad you said it, "Bosch Version", I couldn't think of who was doing it..

The GM MDI will be getting a price increase sometime this summer from $800 to about $1000. Also there is a software coming out in summer of 2008 that will enable GM MDI users to diagnose other N. American and Japanese vehicle. This is going to provide more coverage than just the OBDII tools.

So get the MDI now while the prices are lower.

Anybody know how to buy one today?

Dealer who sells it, or somebody with a 8 digit part number to order from a dealer?

Ryan
