What does flashing the computer do?

What does flashing the computer do? I've read about having the dealer flash the car's computer and/or uploading the newest updates. My car is a 98 Z, and I don't believe either has ever been done. What would be the benefit in doing either or both of these procedures?

Re: What does flashing the computer do? I don't think you'll notice any hp gains if thats what your asking? Usually it is a steroid shot to the pcm basically so it doesn't set up false codes easilly and stuff like that. Some vehicles have options turned off at the factory and need to be turned on or have wrong emissions programmed or mexican program in an american or canadian car. Stupid stuff like that.
Re: What does flashing the computer do? if GM chainged anything (advance, fuel ratio, etc...), when they flash your computer, the new settings will be programed into the comp....
