Default Diagnosing a Clunk.

I have a 1997 v6 manual firebird. When I put it in gear, there's a chance I get a big CLUNK sound BEFORE I release the clutch and I can't figure out where it's coming from. I get the same clunk when slowing to a stop out of gear.

It's been suggested to me that the Universal Joints could be involved.

What can I do to diagnose this myself?

How can I verify that - will there be play in the mount when I get under it?

If it were the transmission mount, wouldn't the transmission buck when I give it gas?

yeah usually the tranny mount only clunks when it upshifts. I dont remember mine clunking while downshifting when my mount was bad.

But id still check it since its pretty easy to check and it a pretty old mount unless a previous owner has already replaced it.
