Default LS1 or LS3

I'm tossing around the idea of going the LS/T56 route in a 79 T/A I have.
I have read some to know that the LS3 is superior to the LS1 butt also quite a bit more expensive. I would like to be around 550 hp with the build so my question is how easy is that to obtain with the LS1 and still maintain reliability?

I'd be happy with 550 at the wheels but at the motor would be acceptable also. Everything revolves around cost and I would like to keep it to a low to mid range cost.

If you want 550 at the motor the LS1 can easily do that, but 550 at the wheel you'd need the LS3

go with the ls3

yes the ls1 can make that kind of power, but you are gonna be spending quite a bit to get there with the ls1. Unless you are building a used one then there maybe some advantages.

a crate ls3 is rated well into the 400hp range depending on which setup you get (jegs has one rated at 480Hp at the moment). A set of headers and a good intake and tune and you are into the 500's easy with that route. to get there with a ls1 you are looking at a pretty extreme setup with a head/cam package and some pretty hefty $ attached. by the time you got finished building it you could have likely bought the ls3 and been in the same place with more room to grow.

I have a 70 camaro I plan on doing this with personally

Thanks for the input on that. You have a point if it is going to take heads and a hefty buildup to achieve that goal with the LS1. I see they have a 525 hp setup also for 9k
