Default steering column help

How far can you tear the steering column down?

Long story short I installed an aftermarket steering wheel and the adapter. I decided I wanted a working horn so I took the wheel back off and I cannot get this ******* adapter off! I have tried two different types of pullers and even heating it up against my better judgement..... Won't budge and now it's mangled to the point I can't get either puller on it. What's worst is my last attempt shredded the center stud.

So I need a new steering column at most, not sure how much of it is interchange able or how far you can tear down a steering column.

Any help would be appreciated

This guide is the best thing I've come across to give you a feel for what you'd be in to: www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/images/d/d6/Jazzman_Steering_Rack_Rebuild.pdf

Our column is nearly identical. That center stud is a key part and it looks like the column is really built around the thing...

yeah from what I can tell (I found a thread on disassembling our column last night) the adapter still being on is gonna screw me from actually tearing it down.

and its just simpler to get another column at this point. Only thing im unsure on is what issues I will run into switching columns. I think vats is disabled on my car, I literally cant remember but Im running a 98 ecm in a 2001 car so Im pretty sure im safe there.

Just dont know if there is anything else that will be an issue, besides having the correct key for that column

There are a few threads around on the swap. Aside from the VATS, everything should be straight forward. There are some subtle differences in the column for the auto vs. the automatic transmission, but you can convert the column to get around those.

It is. Even though the interior column parts are inexpensive and easy to get, used columns are, also. The labor to swap a column is MUCH less than rebuilding one, so dealers and mechanics will often do the swap as it can cost less.
