Default Need tech help

Hi. New here. I need help! I have a' 89 Trans Am, and my right turn signal and emergency flashers stopped working suddenly, and I have no clue where to start. Any help would certainly be appreciated. Thanks

Hey Johnnyb, I'd start by making sure your light bulbs are all still working. Then I'd look at the turn-signal switch and hazard switch to be sure they are working properly too. You should get a chassis manual for your car so you know how this is all wired and what kind of contacts are inside those switches.

If you just bought the car and the bulbs check out ok, and the fuses are good, I'd also look at the flasher relay (GM Genuine Parts 19209674 Heavy Duty Hazard Warning and Turn Signal Flasher ). This is an overlooked part and easy to fix. The actual turn signal switch and hazard button switches can go bad but the flashers tend to go out more often in my experience (91 Impala and 80 Chevy C20 truck). I'd confirm the part number on the part vs. my quick internet search result.

It is remotely possible but unlikely that it would be the flasher since the same flasher operates both sides and the left side still works. There have been cases where the flasher was marginal and one side had more resistance than the other but that is unlikely - think horses rather than zebras when you hear hoofbeats.

Assuming that the right side turn signal indicator goes on but doesn't flash, it is almost certain that a bulb is out or a socket is corroded on the side that doesn't work. Turn on the hazards and walk around the car looking for the bulb that isn't lit (make sure headlights and parking lights are off). Check that socket for corrosion and replace the bulb for good measure.
