oil question
i was just wondering if i put 0-40 wt mobil syn in my t/a, would it quite down the engine knocking(tapping). i am useing 5-30 wt mobil syn right now.(i live in central texas, so not much cold weather).
thanks
thanks
Majority of Gen III engines have piston slap, i wouldnt think a lighter weight oil would make it go away. Its just a factory flaw because the motor is all aluminum, and when aluminum heats up it expands, and thats why it goes away once the engine warms up. So personally id say it wouldnt make a difference. But someone else might think different
i thought that with the oil being 0 wt on the bottom it would get oil up to the top and lubricate faster(on start up) and then at running temp it would be 40 wt wich is thicker and take up some of the clearance, i am not a guru on this so sorry if i sound stupid. what happens is when i start my 02 ws6 m6, it is fine, no tapping but then when it settles into an idle(800 rpm), i always let my car idle for about 4-5 minutes before driving. i can hear the knocking and it realy does not go way until i start driving, then it is fine and will idle fine. if i shut the car off for a few minutes and start it up i can hear the knocking again at idle. my car is still under warranty, do you think i can get the dealer to put new firmer rings in it or would i just be wasting my time, would this even help the problem. i know everybody says not to worry about it, but just the thought of the pistons slaping around in the engine makes me cringe. let me know what you guys think. thanks for the input
It's not lube that makes the Gen 3 slap. It's the slightly barrelled shape that the pistons are cast in. It's supposed to heat up and work normally, but engines that are on the high side of tolerances will have the marbles in a can sound. My '02 'Hawk does it and my friends's '98 Z28 has it bad. His sounds the same as it did a few years ago. He has close to 100k HARD miles and it still has the same level of sound. If you don't like it -save up for a blueprinted short block. Good luck!
