An LS1 is one motor in a long new series in the LS family from GM. You'll see LS1, LS2, LS4, LS6 and LS7. The LS1 and LS6 were both third generation motors with the rest being fourth generation motors. The LS1 and LS6 are basically the same motor with the difference being that the LS6 has a few more performance parts on it (just a modded LS1). The LS motors were a great break-through for GM because they kept them ahead of everyone else. Basically what makes the LS motors so great is that first they have an aluminum block and heads so they're lightweight and also the heads on them flow really well for stock heads. I'm sure someone else will go into a lot more description but I'm just too tired to . Overall they are great motors, built very well and capable of running in the 11's with minor parts and not much $$. If someone else wants to add to mine their is still a lot more info out there.
