Is it worth it?
Hey guys, new to here but Im a frquent member of a Ranger forum. Anyways I found a '79 firebird with 85K miles, 1 owner with a 301 Auto. $5,500, no rust, looks to be solid. I havent looked in depth at it or driven it yet. Its just hanging around in my mind ya know. I did some research, but would like to hear from some actual owners.
Although the motor is small, what can you get out of it for performance? Not sure what 301 it has, I havent talked to the guy yet. Are the conditions I listed worth the $$ ? I can get some pics. Thanks alot guys!

Well basically the 301 is a good motor (if you want a boat anchor) if you want performance go get a 400/455 and build it while you drive the car with the 301, then swap it out
The price sounds a lil steep for just a Firebird, tho it is low miles considering its age, and the 2nd gens seem to be going for a higher price these days, depending on the condition it might just be worth picking it up, depends what you're wanting to do with it, of course no rust is always a big plus
I'd go take a closer look at it, might be just the car you're looking for, or not

Yea, it doesn't matter what 301 it has lol It's STILL a 301. You can't get anything out of it for performance, even the Turbo models. If it's in super nicer condition, top and bottom (underneath), as well as inside, then I'd say that alone would make it worth $4,500-$5K. But it'd have to be mint.
i (as a traditional pontiac guy) would have a hard time swallowing that price tag on a plain jane 301 bird. maybe a nice t/a or formula but not a base model. unless this thing is grandma fresh, i wouldnt spend more then $3k. there has got be be better deal out there then that. just gotta look. lets say you find another nice one from outta state for $3500, then pay about $700 to ship. at $4200, you are still ahead money wise, then use that money to swap in a 455 or 400. good hunting.
