Default 2nd Gen Formulas

As many of you know, if you want a 2nd gen, any Trans Am has gone up to the point where they are like a lot of other classics, kinda getting out of reach of the normal person. Started looking in to 2nd gen Formulas, and the prices are really still affordable. Example, had that been a same year trans Am in that condistion price would have been atleast 2x that amount. Seems like a cool car for a LS1 build, I would have to do a black interior and Trans Am machines turned dash how ever.

Formulas have been underated from the begining. I think all most every model year the TA outsold them. (combining GTA and TA in 3rd gen)

I had a 74 Formula 400 in sunstorm yellow--def was not something you see all the time. Sucked on gas---and lots of 70s Firebirds have awful brown interiors.

LSX engine would be cool---so long as the car is not a rare one.

nice car. keep it old school and either build that motor or drop a 400 or 455 in it. LSX just doesnt look right in an old car.

im not 100% sure you could get an actual 350 in a 78 formula. thought they were either 400s or 403s. might have been a base model option though. if it is just a 350, then thats why the lower price. much less desireable.

Dang... are 2nd Gen prices really going up that much? I guess I got a good deal on my running '79 then.

I only paid $600 cash for it, drove it home, and then put it in storage until I get a place with a garage to keep it in.

Anyway, good luck if you go through with the LS1 build. I hope to start my Trans Am project next summer with body work, a DSE minitub kit, and an all-new factory style interior. Then, hello LS3 and 6L80, C6 brakes, Air Ride, and 12-bolt! It probably won't be complete for at least 3 1/2 years, but 2nd Gen Firebirds are just cool.

If you thinking of modify/upgrade the car with new engine and stuff, why not look for a basic firebird for some small$$ and make a clone. Should be cheaper than Formula or T/A.

Standard engine in a `77 Formula was a 301 with a Chevy 350, Olds 403 (Cali Only), and 2 Pontiac 400's as options. A Poncho 350 may have also been available but I'm not sure.
Car pictured in the OP Example has a 350 Chevy

Could be, I don't have my Pete McCarthy Pontiac Bible to verify this. Right now it's packed away in storage.

I'd be the second one to agree to that.... It's exactly what I want to do with my '76. The Trans Am's and Formulas that are in good shape retain their prices because they are stock. So, if you want to build one up, I'd save a few bucks and find a basemodel in good shape.
