Question What's it gonna take to keep up w/05 GTO?

Hey guys, I just picked up a 04 GTO and was wondering what mods {reasonable priced if possible} could I get to keep up with one or even keep up with a Cobra? I started by getting a cold air intake but I know it will take a lot more than that. I'm pretty new to all of this so any info. would be appreciated. Thanks.

One word: NOS

Other than that, you will have to go cam and some major bolt-ons. you got to make up 50 hp with the 05..

My planned mods below would get you to 400 hp. Get a meaner cam and you will be over.

I've heard about some dopes who are turning their LS1 GTOs into LS6 GTOs. That should do the trick as far as keeping up with the 05s..

I'm making 337/345 with LT's w/cats,P&P'ed TB,and a tune so I'm only about 10-15 rwhp/rwtq away from making the same peak power. Under the curve, I don't know how I would stack up.

Their putting out like 355 RWHP which is a little higher than 400. The torque curve on the LS2 is also much better than the one from the LS1 and the LS6.

It will take a lot

Not really. Z06 cam+intake+headers = $1600 inc. labor.

I am not pulling this out of my *** either. My camaro went from 306 rwhp to 352 rwhp with a K&N FIPK, ZO6 cam and Magna flow catback.

The low end torque of this engine is better than the LT1's is what I am saying, too. It is better than an LS6 engine. To *beat* it, you will need more than 1 RWHP, too.

You know what I mean though, it isn't unstopable, but is better in everyway than the LS1/LS6.

I guess you are right about beating one. My list will just keep up with a LS2. It would take heads to beat one and that would double my price quote.

The engine compartment is the main area of problem with the new Goats. A co-worker of mine picked up an 04 for $30k. Finding a suitable supercharger is becoming a long and agravating search. Best bet is new cam (Z06) and new exhaust. Pretty simple stuff most any V8 with respond well to. As far as the 05's go with the new motor will come new bolt-ons and upgrades and a new standard of GTO parts (LS2 stuff). This will ensure that LS1 GTO parts with decrease in price and be a more budget upgrade. As for the cobra's, their won't be an 05 cobra and several performance companies (Saleen, Roush, Steeda, etc..) are just now getting their 05 mustang donor cars from Ford to modify. All are set to be unveilded at SEMA in Nov. , but no production models until 06 possibly 07, The real threat on the street is the huge number of mods for the 4v mustangs (the 05's and up being 3v). A pulley change on their blowers can be a massive increase in power.

Magnusson makes a blower kit for the GTO already..
