Will a 4L80E fit?
I'm thinking of getting a '05 GTO, probably with an automatic. It won't take long for the 4L60E to die, just wondering if a 4L80E would fit in it's place? I would probably add a blower or turbo in the future so it would be nice to have a tranny that could handle the power.

get a Rossler built 4L60E, that will handle pretty much anything you throw at it. I have one in my 10 second Camaro with no issues at all. Easier than swapping to a 4L80E.

The 05's have a 4L65E if I recall correctly. This is supposed to be stronger than the 4L60, so....give it a shot. The 4L80 is a physically bigs trans, plus it sucks up some horsepower so it might not be worth your while.

The 10-second A4 Goats I've seen are running stock 4L60E's. Lots of other things will break before the tranny.
However, there was word early on that the Goats got a 4L60E with 4L65E components, so it's supposed to be a little stronger.

You have more parasitic losses with a 4L80E (this is a big truck trans with big parts/mass), thus you give up some power to get a stronger trans. In addition, for those that care, the 4th gear overdrive is only .85 so your mileage will drop and your revs will be higher in 4th than with a 4L60E/4L65E.

4L80E is about the same size as a TH400 and would probably fit.The gear ratios are different 2.48,1.48,1.00 and .75,low gear planetaries are available that change the 1st and 2nd gears to 2.75 and 1.57.You would need some custom programming for your PCM to run the transmission or a stand alone transmission controller. The converter is different but PI makes a converter that can use your stock flexplate. There's not a lot of difference in size between the the 4L80E and a 4L65E but the transmission mount is located about 6 1/2 " further back so a custom crossmember is needed, plus the transmission is about 50lbs heavier.
