Default Getting Rid of Power Steering?????

Here is my idea. My first car was a 1993 Dodge Intrepid and I remember the time it lost the serpentine belt (aka: lost all accessories). Since the engine did no longer have to turn a power steering pump, it had much more power. The only problem was I had to fight the fluid in the system when turning the car. I was wondering if it would be possible to remove the power steering pump, remove all the lines, drain the fluid from the rack, and cap off the fitting on the rack. Without any fluid in the rack, it should not be "that" hard to turn. If I am correct, this should result in my having a manual rack and pinion steering set up without having to buy a new rack. What do you think?

Thanks Guys, <img border="0" alt="[hail]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" />

Chris

I have driven a 98Z M6 with the power steering lines just ghetto-looped like a 5.0 Mustang. With stock 16's up front it was a handful. Forget about ever parallel parking the car again...

Madman & Company, one of our sponsors, makes a manual rack conversion that is a complete bolton.

Yeah, John's method is the cheapest way of doing the manual steering conversion... in fact this is how the integra type R's in the World Challenge converted. You don't want to drain out the fluid because then there is no lubrication for the steering rack... Just loop the lines.

Tell me if I understand you correctly:

1) diconnect the lines from the pump to the rack

2) run a hose from the input fitting of the rack to the output of the rack

What do you do with the power steering pump? Do you remove it or just loop it? What do you put in its place?

Thanks

Loop the lines...

Short belt... replace one alt bolt to shorter head one

Ditch the P/S revervoir

Like I said it's ghetto and I'm not sure what will happen to it after a year.

Leave the fluid in the lines
