Default Pyrometer

I've been looking into buying a pyrometer to measure tire temps.

Anyone have xp with dif ones? How about the good/bad between a manual one where you put the probe on the tire and a laser one?
Both are in the same price range ($100-$110).

I have a manual one that is about 10 years old. The probe finally broke of and a new probe costs nearly as much as the whole unit. So, what I want to know, are the laser ones any harder/easier to pinpoint on the place you want to measure? Are the laser ones as accurate and more sturdy?
The manual probes are flimsy, at least on mine. I'm surprised it didn't break a long time ago.

GoodYear, BFG, Michelin....all use the probe type. It is more accurate, and you dont have to get to the tire AS fast as the lazer type. Using The lazer type, I always take 2 or 3 readings to make sure Im at the right spot.

I use both....depending on which one gets there 1st, and then I take a back up with the other one

Okay.
What brand do you use? I see a Reb-Co probe type and I use their air pressure gauge and like it. The laser one is Summit Racing brand, and they claim it is accurate to within 3%.

I only need one G2.
As for testing the tire quickly after the run.. it'd prob be about a min, maybe two before I could get to the tires and test them after each run. And that is after driving slowly back to the grid and parking for the next run. Will this scew the results of either type of meter?

I don't think they'll let me jump right out and test tire temps directly after the run before parking for safety reasons.

BTW, right now this is for autox, but next year I'll be using it for rr too.

The added time in driving around will skew the end result to some extent, and all the RR I/We do, its usually in pit lane, right after/or during a session. The probe type will yeild a more accurate result if you cannot get to them quickly, so that seems like the one for you

Ive used a rebco, and the regular lazer. I reccommend the rebco, and I think that they also sell the lazer type as well.

You cant go wrong with the Probe type

Thanks for that link, Mitch! I almost bought 1 from Summit ($101) for the same one. And I thought that was an okay deal.

I bought a digital probe pyrometer, along with a digital pressure gauge from Longacre about a year ago. I prefer the probe type since the surface of the tire will cool quicker than just under it.

They only offer a 1 year warranty, and both recently began acting flakey. The display would jump around to unusual readings even when it was on but not in use.

Make a sheet to record your changes too!

What I'm really interested in is a really cheap way to get my corner weights. I had read somewhere you can use something with bathroom scales. But, at almost 4000lbs, I don't know any bathroom scales which display up to 1000lbs, or wouldn't be damaged.

I remember seeing that set up in Don Alexander's book. Ruggles'cales is the company (I just looked it up). No ph. was listed, though. A trip to google might be useful.

In case anyone is interested, I found a dealer for the scales...

G2: Do you have any opinions on using this lever setup vs. the $1000-$6000 setups?

I have seen those scales around, but keep in mind, you are putting the setup of your car on the line with these devices. If you are really serious, just get some digital scales, and then find a level area to place them and weigh the car. Consider it as an investment, not just a tool. They will outlast the car and then you can sell them.

Aria was at the DC race, and Im sure that he can vouch for having a car setup properly. Did we have the scalepad setup then or not? I dont remember

I honestly didn't see the scale at your pit before the race. Unfortunately I remembered too well that the car was on jackstands after that over anxious rookie hit your car...

By the way, have you guys decided what series to call home next season? Happy studying...
