Question Water temps

What water temps are you seeing in racing conditions? We're just in the testing phase in our LS1-equipped off-road car, with 200 degrees at idle and cruise, spiking to 240 when we get on the gas. It drops right back to 200 when we back off. We have no thermostat, a lot of plumbing to get from rear mounted waterpump (rear engine powers transaxle), and a 30 x 15 radiator with fan mounted behind driver. No oil cooler yet.

It is hard to say. GM did not equipped Firebirds and Camaros with an accurate gauge. In My TA I hardly see any temps higher than 200° while on the track however this was in cool days in spring and autumn. I haven't been to the track during summer yet. Also it would be hard to compare as TAs and Camaro's are bottom feeders so as long as they are moving the radiator is able to cool the water adequately, Fan are useless unless you stopped in traffic. In fact I installed a fan switch and while driving on the highway if I set it to Hi I hardly see any temperature difference compared to having it turned off. I know of some of guys changing to aftermarket radiators because the LS1 radiator was smaller than radiators used in LT1 cars, especially in the south. But given your current temperatures I would be concerned.

Your temps should not be over 200, 230 is where I would shut it down. Make sure the gauge is accurate.

you are also the ones with a 5/16" restrictor instead of a thermostat that your " Builder " sent you---right.???.....you should really run a thermostat..... just read your other post again....LS1's run warmer..no comparison at ALL to small block chevy's ..or Buicks as you refer to....I don't think a spike to 240 is that unusual in these engines.....you should maybe ask this in the ADVANCED PERFORMANCE section...
