SSCA racing mods
I am thinking of trying this SSCA racing since our local drag strip here in oahu hawaii has been shut down since 2006. I purchased a 2002 z28 and the car is stock. I have never done any road racing whatsoever so I have no clue really where to start as far as mods go. So where do I begin? I dont want to dump a ton of cash into the car since it is my DD as well but I dont want to damage the frame or anthing either. So if there is anyone here that may lend me a hand in what to get it would be great. Thanks in advance...
Oh i guess i should have mentioned that I have zr1 wheels and sumitomo 275 in front and 315's on the rear. Got the car with them already on.
Most of the basics would apply (depending on class limitations). Make sure all the fluids on the car are up to par, especially the brake fluid, brake pads/rotors.
Intake and exhaust will of course help the car all around, then you can get some upgraded brake pads (some Hawk street/track pads or similar) and can go from there.
cheapest would be FS, i think its called. can think of it as literally meaning f-body, stock, as thats where all our unmodified cars end up. no modifications at all (maybe a CAI, cat-back), stock suspension. r-comp. tires are usually a freebe, so you might look into getting a second set of rims and buying tires, and call it a day.
change of shocks in stock locations, pickup points, and spring/shock configurations
change of front sway bar
R compound tires on stock OEM wheel sizes
cat back exhaust system
alignment within stock system (no 'slotting'/offset bushings, etc.)
That was it.
ALL other bushings, suspension, axle ratios, intake, etc. MUST be as it came from the factory, either base, or as a FACTORY ordered option.
Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.
Next class would be STU (Street Touring Ultra)in which you are only allowed a few more modifications than the stock class. It is generally not a good class for our cars because you'll be running against All wheel drive cars like Mitsubishi Evos and Subaru Imprezas.
Then there is ESP (E Street Prepared) , SM (Street Mod) and CP (C Prepared) each increases the allowances for modifications. Read through this and figure where you are right now and where you would like to be. I would personally just find out where I fall and just race there for a year before starting to modify the car. The Nut behind the wheel will need a lot of adjustment before the car does. Then once you start getting consistent you can start looking to ways of improving the car within rules of the class you want to run. The most successful classes for F-Bodies are FStock and ESP. Other classes are tougher to be competitive in.
Good luck!
