Default Ok wanted to check pushrod length but this is very confusing..

So know a mechanic guy races old small and big block chevies. He offered to help me on my 408. Mods are stock afr 225 heads, lingenfelter gt7 cam with about 560 lift with 1.7 rockers but I have 1.8 yella terra non adjustable.Take lift to 580 or so..

Now he is telling me we have to remove valve springs..I don't think so. And hearing have to get a solid lifter to test..I just put on the heads and AM NOT going to take them off to install a solid lifter not a chance..ls1 lifters are under the heads and even if they weren't not going to take off intake to install a solid lifter.

I thought just needed to buy the 20 buck tester..no idea what this guy has..
And turn it with my hydraulic lifters to zero lash or something and test that way.So whats the deal here..no one would be checking pushrod length on an already assembled engine at least I won't tear it apart to check it would take my chances. I have 7.4 moly pushrods currently.

You would remove two rockers(1 intake, 1 exhaust). Adjust your pushrod length tool to about 7.350(maybe more maybe less depending on your setup). Reinstall the rocker and tighten to 22 ft.lbs. Loosen the pushrod tool until it contacts the rocker and the rocker has no play between the valve tip and pushrod(zero lash). Remove the tool without turning it and measure it with a caliper or count the turns(each is equal to .050) and add the length of the tool(about 6.8").

Take the length of the tool + the amount of turns + .080(preload) and that is your pushrod length.

Example: 6.8" + .5"(10 turns) + .080 = 7.380...this is from my motor in which I used a 7.375" pushrod.

Hope this helps.

Your mechanic friend is describing the way to do things with an adjustable valvetrain setup. We have a non adjustable valvetrain, so do things like MrElectric said

As MrElectric pointed out, .080 is a good range to shoot for with stock lifters. So take the reading you get with the measuring tool, and add .080, then this will equal the length of pushrod you should get.

Don't you need to check the pushrod length when the cylinders you are checking are in firing position on the cam? I know that you are supposed to torque the rockers down only when the valves are riding on the cam a certain way, anyone know for sure, and if so how do you position the valves on the cam?
