Default *Ticking Noise* - Is It A Wrist Pin Or Loose Flywheel Bolt?

So I brought my car to the shop today and they gave me some not so nice news. The ticking I thought was originally an exhaust leak ... isn't.

They narrowed it down to either the trans case or the oil pan (I was there, and they were right - def not exhaust or valvetrain). They're best guess/estimate w/o taking the engine apart was that it was either a loose flywheel bolt or a faulty wrist pin.

So now questions for you guys:

A) Have any of you had one of these two problems and could possibly shed some light on the situation?

B) How much will this potentially cost me????

Thanks so much

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've had a ticking noise from under the car for over a year now, I think it's an exhaust leak, but maybe it's not. 6400-6500 shifts a few times a week for 10k with the ticking.. guess I'm not worried about it anymore. When it breaks it will let me know what was wrong.

A wristpin would be more of a light knock than a tick and I really don't see how a loose flywheel bolt would tick?

Nah it's def not the valve train. I know because I thought it WAS and re-did my ENTIRE heads/cam only to still have the same F-ING sound there ....

have a AAA tow ready just incase and keep driving it. See if it gets louder/worse. Im not sure what it could be but why take it apart if nobody knows for sure what the problem is.

It's almost def a wrist pin. It's getting worse and it's def now more of a knock. F-ing figures - I got the bottom end of the car re-done to AVOID crap like this, and this happens. Thanks TTP.

Does it get worse as it warms up? If so then it may be a wristpin or even a C-rod bearing.

No. If anything it starts to get a LITTLE better as the car warms up. And NO, it's definitely not piston slap for anyone that's thinking that. The car had piston slap w/the original pistons and I know all too well what that sound is.

This is definitely more of a knock than a ticking now that I really listen to it last night.

Not sure who your shop is but there are several in NJ that specialize in LS1s, I would definitely go to one of them before I concluded anything.

Have you checked your header bolts? Mine was making a similar noise and I tightened my hearder bolts and it went away.

I took it to the one shop in Nj I can actually trust and SEVERAL of their mechanics concluded it was under the car somewhere b/t the back of the tranny/flywheel area and the oil pan.

I was under there too and sadly that seemed the case.

They're best guess w/o ripping the motor apart was either a loose flywheel bolt or a faulty wrist pin.
