Default Having trouble re-installing my fuel pump

95 Trans am. I was pouring gas out every time I filled up and a continuing smell of gas fumes. I poured soapy water over the top of the area where the pump sits on the tank, gave the tank a blast of air and bubbles galore around the seal. I ordered a complete assembly from Spectra and took out the old and as I'm installing the new I have this extra ring. It wasn't on the old one. I "think" this would be the lock ring that you hammer around but not sure. Mine is bolted in. Anyway, I need to be absolutely sure it doesn't fit in there somehow because I cannot pass a soap test with the new install with the new gasket. It leaks every time I shoot a blast of air in there. I attached a picture for all to see. If it does go in there, how? I can't see how it would fit on my setup.
Thanks in advance

Yes that is a lock ring and it doesn't look like it would work in your application, If it did you would have tabs on the tank for it to lock into.
