Default 4L80E input shaft interchange, '92 into '06?

I have a spare '06 to rebuild and keep as a spare. Theres a huge groove in the very front of the input shaft from the bushing. I have some '92 parts laying around. The ATSG book says the main difference is two holes to feed the forward clutch instead of one.

Would it be a bad idea to use a '92 input shaft in an '06 4L80E?

The LS style input shafts are not interchangeable with the early shafts (pre-1998). The late style (2006 & up) that you have has the 4 ring grooves in a different location than earlier input shafts. There are two different type of late style shafts. LS and non-LS. You need to match the late style shaft you have here. The late (2006 & up) input shafts have the input speed sensor on them (vertical teeth). This should clarify things somewhat.

OOPS - This describes the 4L60E input shaft, not the 4L80E.

Better wear my glasses from now on....

I'm no expert compared to you (you've given me a ton of great advice on various forums and on the phone) but it sounds like you're talking about a 4L60E.

My question is about a 4L80E

Maybe I'm wrong....
The '92 shaft has red rings.
Only other differences is the I.D. grooves and the bearing journal is slightly wider on the '06. And as said earlier the forward clutch feed, two on the '06 and one on the '92.

I think you may end up with a lube issue. I believe it's recomended to use all the supporting parts. Worst case you burn it up.

Year model isn't an issue on a 4L80E input shaft. The later models are supposedly made of better material/metallurgy.

I doubt it. This is a clutch feed, not a lube feed.
Makes no sense why they added another hole to one end of the feed(center of shaft), but left one hole feeding the other end (FAR right hand of the ATSG pic).

The other grooves in the circle are just ID grooves.
