JE "Nascar" Pistons, looking for Info
Just wanted to get some opinions on a set of JE Pistons I keep seeing for sale all over this site, a few others, and Ebay. JE part #245188 Listed as Yates "Nascar" Pistons. Prices for a used nice looking set are low, which of course leads me to believe they are not good for street use and thus that is why they have no value. I was thinking of popping a set into my Lq4 forced induction build, intended for street use as a good forged piston substitute for the expensive stuff. I haven't ruled out a couple of other offerings but if I can save $$ and have a decent part I will be happy.
Specs are:
Bore: 4.000
.923 floating wrist pins
Flat Top
Comp Height: 1.314
Piston Weight: 481
With a 6.125 Rod in my LQ4 with LS9 gaskets and L92 heads the summit racing compression ratio calculator puts my CR is right around 10:5:1 a little high for a boosted build but I plan to temper it with E85 anyway, or quality 93 octane from time to time when E85 isn't accessible.

The Nascar LS2 spec engines use LS2 heads (243/799 castings) these are GM stock heads that are ported. The valve size is limited to stock valve size. Wegner developed the initial engines. I don't think the spec motors have canted valves - because a LS2 (243/799) head casting is used.

Spoke to them over at JE. I think I am going to either pull the trigger on a more expensive set or leave the block stock. This would be a great piston for a high revving ls2... but the tops are very thin and supposedly its not a good choice for forced induction.
Thanks,

Even those I've seen split in the center from ragged edge tunes and continuous detonation

Sounds like those pistons are like some of us; don't do well under lots of pressure! lol

I have a set of the spec pistons in the shop.. they aren't real light, which makes me think the top cant be too thin. I'm putting them in a engine with square port heads, and 57cc chambers.. and will be spraying 250hp at least..time will tell how they do (I have a cam from the spec engine as well).

I bought a set of these pistons for my first turbo build on an LS. An LQ4 with twins. I eventually broke a turbine shaft in one of my S467 turbos after about a year and threw a set of ON3 78/75s on it. These pistons are not doing what I expected. They won’t die. I have almost two years of street driving with a season at the track on between 30 and 40psi. I also don’t turn the boost down on the street.

Don't ya hate when things don't break so you can try something else?? LOL

I hate hearings stuff like that because it makes me what to give them a shot anyway even though logic states I shouldn't lol. I got a deal on a set of K1 H-beam rods btw. Still scouring for a killer price on pistons. In no rush though, working on too many other projects all at the same time.
