I’ve got a 4l60e behind a boosted lq4. Looking at getting a 2-step to build boost at the line. Anyone had luck doing this? Would like to leave on a few lbs so it’s not a slug out the hole. Obviously no transbrake, but was hoping I could remove some timing and set the 2-step rpm lower than my stall size and hopefully can get some boost built up relatively quickly.

Let’s hear your thoughts.

 

My first thought is that if your suspension hooks good, your 4l60 will break. Once you upgrade to a beast sunshell, 5 pinion planetary, Zclutch packs, etc., you will end up hitting a wall when you start breaking tailshaft housings. At that point you have probably invested a lot more than just doing an 80 swap to begin with.
edit-- once you start welding clutches in the 80, then you are in powerglide territory.

 

I've turn many low 1.30 60fts with a best of 1.29 with 4l60e even ride wheels up out past the 60ft marker. Your not gonna break it building a few lbs of boost off the line. Go for it.

Well it’s a fox body so it should hook in the mud. My thoughts are with a light raceweight I should get a little bit of life out of the shittyE. It’s a street car that I want to turn good times at the track as well. Was hoping some folks on here has tried the 2-step without transbrake, and if it’s worth buying one. I’ve got a boost leash with pulse (which I can’t use) boost controller but it will take awhile to get the 88mm to start making steam. Poor thing might do a 2.0 60’ with no boost at the line.

 

If you could see the teaser vid I posted that is footbraking. 2 step is hooked to the brake pedal. It made a noticeable difference in 60ft.

 

what level of 60e are we talking here? like a level 10 or the level 11 100% billet everything including case and pan?

 

Im in the same ballpark. Havent gotten to test mine yet, and it should do well off the footbrake but we always want more right? You can win a lot of races just nailing a nice 60ft off a good light.

 

I turned a many of mid 1.3's 60ft on an aamco built 4l60e. No billet anything. Just some upgraded clutches and sun shell. My newest 4l60e is built by rpm and it has billet shafts, sonnex smart drum, 2.84 planet among other things. It is for sale!!!

Most of the problems come from shitty builds. Can't have your buddy uncle that used to work at a tranny shop put on together for you. Good parts and a good builder will net you a great trans. If your one of those guys that just breaks **** in life then you ought to not go with a 4l60e either. Anything south of 700hp-800hp should not be a problem for a well built 4l60e.

 

Ya it was built by a friend of mine, which he built the one in my trans am that takes a 250 shot out the hole. However it looked like silly has gotten a 2 step to work pretty well on his car. So looks like I’ll be using my brake pedal to activate it.

 

 

Your estimates (as well as mine) are based on certain race weights. Your 700 hp may let a 60 last forever in a 2800# track car, but that same transmission in a 500awhp Escalade is toast on the first launch. I am so accustomed to 60s being used in mainly full weight street builds that I forget to consider other uses.

 

I foot brake 1.60s with a 60 e. On 9 lbs ran a 10.75 @ 131 with a 1.62 60ft.... doing the 2 step as we speak.... would like to leave on 2-4 lb of boost to wake it up like you said... guess we’ll find out together if they hold up!

 

I would love to see a spreadsheet of race weight vs 60' time vs number of launches the 4l60 survived. That would tell a great story. If their are some real outliers on either end, the trans builder would also be of interest.

 

I'll agree to disagree. While a 4l60e is not my favorite trans and or the most durable trans when it is properly built and used a 4l60e will hold up and last a long time In a street/strip car like mine turning 1.30 60ft and 9's or an everyday pickup truck that is used for towing. Heck RPM has some guys that use them in 1000hp pickup trucks. My buddy's zo6 just went 8.9x's with a RPM 4l60 conversion. His is a true street car driving almost every weekend. Just sayin

 

I'm guessing this involves some sort of billet output shafts and great housing that I have not ever used, because after everything north of the tailshaft is bullet-proofed, I still see output shafts breaking, and blowing up the tailshaft housing.
