Default 4L80E Vs. Built4l60e Vs. TH400 ??

Hello Everyone. I am curious on which transmisson is better to run after the stocker goes out.

What are the advantages and disandvantages for these transmisson in a comparison?

What type of tuning and mods are required for fitment on a f-body when doing a th-400 swap our a 4l80e?

Which one of these transmissons will be more bang for the buck. Which one will be easier to obtain?

Which one will be better for street and drag strip use?

I plan on doing a H/C setup soon and I am already planning ahead just incase if my tranny died.

This has been discussed, here's my opinion:

...and here:

In short, the 4L80-E is an unmatched 4-Speed Auto in well-mannered power handling.

Will the same convertor on the 4l60e fit the 4l80e?

No, the 4L80-E has a larger input shaft and pump drive hub. The pump drive is ground flat on two sides to interface with the pump gear instead of notched linke the 60.

T400 wll hold anything built right for sure. A good bit lighter then the 80E and less parasitic drag. Choice of first gear ratios etc. Fully customizeable race trans

4L80E is at least close to the 400 in strength, but no transbrake. It can be worked with the stock PCM, and a fbody or truck can shift it electronically, and retain lockup. Good bit heavier.

th400s are stronger then the others will ever be, and lighter. I laid my 400 next to a 4l60e and picked them both up and the th400 feels alot lighter. I need to put them both on a scale and see what the weight saveing on my car will be.

ithere was a recent thread with a guy saying his 4L80e was only 40lb heavier than a 4L60e. its not that much heavier and for a street car, its worth it for the overdrive alone without paying 2,500 for a GV od.

TCI said to put a 4L80E in an fbody it requires major floorpan modification and the torque arm brackets must be fabricated. What are they considering "major" modification?

I need a new tranny, mine went out last week. Havent decided to rebuild mine or buy a built race tranny. It needs to have OD though. I know guys that bought the $2000 Max Evil 4L60E and it has already went out on them (rated to hold 600+ horsepower and these guys were only pushing 500). I know guys that had their 4L60E rebuilt and they never had anymore problems with it. Some guys had theirs rebuilt and it has went out already also. What to do what to do?

My coworker has the 4l80 in his fbody...I know he didn't modify the floorpan. Don't know about torque arm brackets. The biggest problem he's had so far has been finding the right convertor for his setup (not in terms of fitment..but in terms of correct stall.)

no matter what you do, do NOT waste any more $$ on the 4L60E. TH400's are relatively cheap, can handle anything, and are an easy install. In the unlikely event it does crap out, you can replace it for a lot less $ than the electronic overdrives, converters are cheaper too. No OD is not that bad if you don't go crazy on the rear gear. Cars had no OD for years and years- we're just spoiled now...
