Default high compression and starters...

I have an iron 6.0 block in a fourth gen trans am with 13:1 compression and 1 7/8 American Racing long tube headers. The stock starter isn't up to the task of starting the car (shocker I know) so I bought an XS Power mini starter that is good for high compression. I had to clock the starter to get it to clear the crank sensor but now it's hitting the header.

What starters are you guys using?

I don't have the compression you do but I have close to 11.5. I am running one of the newer starters of a trailblazer ss I think. It's smaller than the factory ls1 starter. I haven't had any trouble, It saves a little weight too.

I had 11:5 before this rebuild and the stock starter was fine, it just isn't spinning the engine fast enough now. Plus I have a smaller battery and it's in the back of the car. I just think with the longer cables, higher compression and smaller battery it just isn't enough.

Do you have a custom cam that is built for the high compression? I ran 12.5-1 with a custom grind and with the bleed off cylinder pressure the stock started worked fine

I did have a powermaster at first but got tired of rebuilding solenoids

How large of cable did you run? And did you run the ground wire too or just to the chassis by the battery?

The cam is the same cam I had with the 11:5. I'm using a...4g (I'd have to check to be sure but it's beefy) cable running the hot side on the battery I think and the same for the ground. It's grounded in the rear near the battery.

I am running a 4.5lb battery up front. Your battery being in the back isn't helping for sure.

Especially with it grounded to the unibody. Steel conducts 16% of what copper does and your relying on primered sheetmetal welded with spot welds to carry the 200 or more amp load of the starter

You need need the same size ground cable from the battery to block as you do positive, larger the better

I run an 18lb deep cycle up front in my car to keep the system voltage drop to a minimum with all the efi stuff that needs it

I'll have to address that, thanks for the info.

I may need to look into a different starter, this xs power starter doesn't fit.
