Default Need help picking out a stall

The Car is a 1981 Camaro. The problem I have now is the stall. When I am cruising down the highway the car is turning over 4000rpms when doing 70MPH. My question for you guys is, what stall should I run? I want the car to be streetable (go on a cruse) and still have performance. I know that I am going to give up some performance to get the streetablity but I would like to be able to drive my car around town and go on a cruse every now and then.

Thanks

3000 should be fine, 3200 is easier to find, what does the car stall to hitting the brake before it tries to spin?

Right now it will stall up around 3200-3500. It just seems like too much. I was thinking about going with a 2800 stall, I was thinking that it might be better for the street. What do you think?

Stock tach isn't worth dick, and stopped working about six years ago. It is an aftermarket autometer.

Alright, i am on track then. A 4000 stall will brake to 3500 give or take weight and engine power. Now a 3000 stall will go to 2750 or so depending on weight and power. So, if that helps you any, the stall advertised speed is usually a "flash" speed. It will hit its advertised flash from idle, but braking it will only go about 3-500 RPM less, maybe more if it is a loosed stall. You have a 3800-4000 it sounds like to me. A good 3000 stall should have you cruising about 2500 RPM.

We can build you a converter that will do what you want it to do. We run 35-3600 converters in 3 speeds all the time on the street with great results. They drive nice and tight until you stomp it. We offer several different models ranging from 295.00 to 795.00. Go to our website and look or give me a call at 1-866-726-8358 mon-fr 8-5 est.

thanks,
Greg

Sounds good I will give you a call asap. Do you have lock up converters that would work on my TH400? I would like to have one to lock up just in case I wanted to drive down the highway for awhile (50 miles or so).

Thanks

Thanks this helped me out a lot. I was told that the converter in my car was a 3000 stall when I bought the converter from a local guy. When I installed it I knew it was not a 3000 stall. I hate people sometimes.

Thanks again.

No problem, if FTI can build you a converter to your specs as they say, that is what i would to, 3200 is really my personal choice, is your TH400 a lock up trans?

I have a COAN 3800 that stalls a little higher on the bottle. It was great on the street, pretty tight and screamed at WOT.

With a 28 inch tall tire and 4.10's I was in the low 3,000 RPM range at 65mph. I want to say 3,200.

As far as I know it will work for A SBC type motor also. Ill sell it for 300 something shipped (what COAN is selling them for). It took a 300 shot no problem and lots of beatings no problem.
If you are interested I can send you the numbers on it.
