Default Wtf is this plug?

I have a '74 Nova that has a moderate 355 in it. A couple of months ago it started leaking oil that progressivly had gotten worse and worse. After a bit of inspection I believe it was coming from the oil pressure sensor. However, this was not the case. I removed the driver's side head to find a plug on the deck of the block that's half covered by the head. Somehow this had come loose and was spewing oil down the back of the engine. I'm now looking to fix the leak and I can't seem to find anybody that knows what I'm talking about. Is there any specific torque spec or way to keep this little bad boy from backing itself out again?

It's a tapered pipe plug.
I've never heard of one coming loose.
Might want to check the threads, make sure they're not stripped.

Yes, 1/4" National Pipe Thread

It would be very, very odd, but if this plug was installed at a machine shop they may have, by mistake, installed a orificed plug for the cam oil galley in a big block chevy.
So make sure it doesn't have a hole drilled in it.

Either way, the head is going to need to come off. It's a pain in the butt but that's the only way to get to it.
