hey guys i have an 86 monte with the 5.7 vortec engine and i have a bad lifter tick on the passenger side... we have adjusted rockers numerous amounts of times and put new rocker nuts on and tighten header bolts and everything so i think its a bad lifter because we just used the lifters that came with the block in our rebuild because they rolled good and didnt seem to have any problem so i am looking for a set of lifters for a 5.7 vortec i think years are like 98-01/2 i forgot exactly but if anyone can help me out i would appreciate it or comments that could help me with the tick i am not 100% sure its a lifter so i am open to suggestions thanks

The Gen I SBC factory roller lifters are the same from 87 to 02.

If you have non-roller lifters, they're the same from 1955 up into the late 80s or early 90s when trucks still had flat tappets (but all passenger cars were running roller by the 90s.)

I re-used a flat tappet cam w/ a set of lifters from Autozone years back in my 86 SS. Lubed, set zero lash and fired things up; it broke in just fine.

thanks but idk wut was up with this set of lifters the engine has well over 500 miles on it so i dnt think its a break in problem

Did you over rev the motor ? Also if you have a mechanical fuel pump the fuel pump rod could make that ticking noise.There was a old trick i used to do when a lifter ticked.Put a little bit of tranny fluid in your motor.Tranny fluid is hydraulic fluid so it pump's up the lifter's.

i'd bet it will be an exhaust leak somewhere.

it hasnt been revved past 6200-300 and yes i do have a brand new mechanical fuel pump with a new rod and i know u have to get a diff rod for the roller cam so we did. I mite try the tranny fluid thanks and we have real good header gaskets and they are tightened down real tight and we also held our hand over the end of the exhaust which should make the sound louder if it were exhaust and it didnt do anything different.

crank it in the pitch dark and if it's an exhaust leak at the head then you'll be able to see a little flicker from the flames but it has to be very dark to see it. if not that, then i would pull the valve covers and check for slack in the push rods and make sure the lock nuts haven't backed off. then if all is good there i would then pull the lifters and replace them. check the rocker arms good cause i've had a few that wore though the rocker with the end of the valve stem if you still have the factory rockers, it would just make a ticking sound like the valve were loose.
