Default well ****..

just got my truck in from missouri yesterday.. i put about 50 miles on it, then filled the tank with premium (91 octane in phoenix). all of a sudden, my truck starts detonating slightly and completely loses power when a decent load is put on it (roll on at 30 mph in 2nd gear?). im stumped. im almost certain its an ignition issue, due to the fact that its intermittent, sometimes it will go all the way through second with no problem, other times it sputters and almost dies.

i pulled the cap off and cleaned the contact between the cap and the rotor, and it seemed to help until i WOT'ed it in 1st gear, then i shifted to 2nd and the same sputtering/dying bullshit started happening. my mechanic back home said the rotor could be burned and dropping voltage. i had no flashlight and i inspected it in the dark, so i suppose it could be the case but im not sure.. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Usually if hte rotor is burnt, I won't run. The spark goes thru it and grounds out on the dist shaft. It sounds as if the cap might be cracked. A minute' crack will cause this problem, and you can't see the crack.

really?! thatd be ******* sweet if it was something that simple.. id didnt do it at all today, buuut it did detonate like a sumbitch. could the cracked cap be intermittent or would it happen all of the time?

gaunt, go to pavilions this weekend and find out! its almost the exact same, not quite as blue.. a little more silverish.

With the experience I have had, I does it all the time. Not saying that it won't be intermittent, but mostly all the time. Also, after dark, get a windex spray bottle full of water and mist the plug wires while it is running to see if they are bad. They will usually "glow". Also, use some dielectric grease on both ends of the wire boots.

its just a 4" lift with 36" tires but i just got the truck tuesday, so it hasn't been around. what do you drive? if you go saturday, PM me.

cambird, didn't get a chance to replace the cap/rotor today but i did dial back the timing 4 degrees and it runs a little smoother down low, doesnt detonate as badly.
