too small cam for 383?
too small cam for 383? i have a 79 vette with a SBC 383 with a holly 4140 carb. the cam that is in it is as follows:
224/230 509'' 516'' 112 lsa
is this cam too small for that motor and what cam would you guys recomend for more power from this motor. motor is brand new and only a month old with 50 miles, all forged.

You can never have too small of a cam really as far as driveability goes. If you are looking for maximum power, yes, that cam is on the small side. Cam selection mainly goes on what you are wanting to do with the car. If you want the car to be really driveable and make good power, I have used the comp 280H cam in a similar setup. I know its very old school and not the newest technology, but its a nice, lumpy cam with a great power band.
To give you an accurate idea of what cam would be good, we need to know some things:
What do you wanna do with the car??? street? track?
What compression is the motor?
Auto or Manual?
If auto, what size stall?
Rear Gears?

If you have a stock or small converter I would keep what you have. If you want a more radical idle and have the converter(or are willing to change) I would prolly go with something like a 238-242 dur @50 cam on a 110lsa.

Thats a nice size street cam, but nothing crazy. With a cam like that, decent heads, good intake and 650-680CFM Carb you can expect 430+HP/460+TQ. You can always step it up in cam, but change springs as well....flow the heads and have a cam spec'ed for optimal performance/needs.

CompCam 280H (.486 lift I/E & 230 @ .050 I/E)
Had a nice lope, pulled great with 2.73's, 3.08's, and 3.73's using a stock converter,a 2200, and 3000....didn't matter.
The only draw back is it's a hydraulic flat tappet....but with the right oil it will last a long long time.
