Default I need power...

What's up everyone? I just joined and I need power. Well, knowledge is power too, right?

Share your power with me!

I have a 1972 Vega GT with a 4 cylinder that is all original!

What is the most inexpensive way to get 400+ HP and TQ?

Should I go 350? LQ4? LQ9?

I want to keep the car standard as it is a 4 speed right now but don't know which standard I should go...

I need something bullet proof! And as far as rear end... What rear end would be ideal for strip AND street.

Dig AND roll races.

Share you wealth of knowledge with me!

Thank you, All

Lq4 and lq9 engines make good hp with just camshaft upgrades and what not or really big hp with turbo set ups but that's more costly.

I have a 5.3 with a 222/224 comp cam, gears, stall, & and tune in my silverado and it performs really well.

My 4.8 in my s10 with baby cam, small intake, small carb and small headers made 312
Rwhp and 308 TQ. 8.4 at 84 mph 1/8th mile, 5.3 in my 3400 pound TA with a cam, 4L80 and 4.30 gears went 7.7 at 91 on a 1.7 60 and my 6.0 with cam and th400, tight converter and 3.73s went 6.9 at 100 mph on a 1.55 60 foot. So that gives you a idea of the ability of the different engine sizes.

I'll never run a old small block again. I have only put a carb and cam in all of those and the 6.0 is the only one with aftermarket pushrods.

Even swapping a regular SBC into a Vega is a PITA. There are specific headers, oil pan and other items required. Thankfully, kits are available for this because guys have been doing this swap since I was a little kid. With that said, the LS can be done (several on LS1tech have done it). You just need fabrication skills or need to know someone that does. For sure, the LS swap will be cooler but also a lot more expensive. 400HP with either generation small block is very easy.

regarding engine building or choosing, there are a lot of good books on amazon that are less than $20 and explain everything. the bottom line is an engine produces torque and you build or choose to provide a torque curve that you want over an rpm range. horsepower is mathematical and the result of the most torque happening at the highest rpm, which means oftentimes a 400+ hp especially at just 350 cubic inch displacement is happening at 5000 rpm or higher and the motor produces less torque in the lower rpm range (because of the cam) which means it can be a dog at low rpms and not that great on the street. bottom line is what makes power is higher compression which means higher octane fuel, along with the phrase- no replacement for displacement.
this book details the parts that was used i think to make 400hp build out of a 350,

350 with a nice pair of flowing heads and cam will get you there
