Default Help ..basic SBC rookie here

I have a 83 Jaguar XJS with a Supposed 84 corvette SBC ready for install block number #3970010 or may be a 8 instead of a 3 can't tell.

I had some basic questions…
I realize its a serpentine setup…so do i just exchange the pulleys.. 6 spline..
is this a good purchase

Anything else i should worry about in terms of when the Carb is mounted and tuned?

certain gaskets to use..felpro?

what kind of amp alternator …

and power steering pump

here are some pictures attached.

Stay away from fel-pro. Use gaskets directly from GM.

Fel-Pro is great, this isnt a LS motor (FelPro > GM)

Hey Tuskyz28 go to a chevy dealership and buy a Holley 4150 gasket. let me know how that works out for you.

I see that the passenger side head is drilled and tapped for accessories. That being said you have the wrong water pump, get a long water pump. Make sure the pulleys you get are for a long water pump. a 100 amp 1 wire alternator works great and easy to wire, just 1 10 gauge wire to a (pos) battery source. on the P/S pump you are on your own I have no clue, I have a borgeson pump on my SBC Mustang, got it at Summit Racing.

a good source of info on this swap is >>>> http://www.jagsthatrun.com/

The block maybe an 84 model but the heads sure aren't. Those heads appear to be the old camel hump style used back in the 60's. They were not drilled and tapped for accessories, if they were, they would have flat pad bosses with more meat on them to add the bolt holes. If the passenger head is actually drilled and tapped then the hole will go into the oil side of the valve cover which can and will leak oil. It will also be weak at that point to mount any accessories. and can crack the head. Check the head casting numbers i bet they are either 461, 462 or possible 292.
The problem you are going to have is mounting the alt., power steering, air?
You will have to find 60's brackets to install these accessories, original? or aftermarket possibly will be chrome.

you can clearly see a hole in the pass cyl head, just under the valve cover. I know about double hump heads, I personally have 3 sets in my shed. yes you can drill and tap them without issues, and no they were never intended for that particular use, but it can and has worked in the past.

3970010 is a 1969-1979 block. So it being from a 84 Vette is not true, There is more vette motors claimed to be installed in other vehicles then were made from the factory. So I would pop a valve cover and get the casting number from the heads and post them up too, as stated those look like camel humps from the 60's.

This. I have a couple of these blocks laying around. 2 and 4 bolt main. My best one came out of my dad's 1977 Olds Delta 88.

Fel-Pro is my favorite gaskets for an SBC. I only other gasket I use are Cometic head gaskets for my race car. Otherwise all Fel-Pro head gaskets and everything else.
