283 Timing help!!!!
- pull the distributor out, does not matter where the rotor is at.
- pull all the plugs
- put your finger on the #1 (front drivers side) spark plug hole and turn the motor over by hand via the harmonic balancer bolt, until you hear and feel air coming out of cylinder #1
- then line up the balancer line to 10-12 deg BTDC (Before Top Dead Center).
- the gear on the dist has 8 teeth so put the cap on and scribe or mark with a sharpie where #2 and #1 on the base of the dist.
- line up the rotor to #1 and take note on the orientation of the oil pump drive on the dist and make the actual oil pump drive match in the motor via a large flat head screw driver
- now position the rotor to #2 position and drop the dist in as shown in the pic provided, the rotor will turn to #1 when dropped in.
- if it sets about .5" out and doesnt drop all the way down you can either pull it back out and tweak with the oil pump drive again, or simply turn the motor over and it will drop down
- snug the dist clamp to where you can still move the dist but it wont move by itself when the engine is running
- put the wires on in the firing order provided in the pic.
- the wire used to provide power to the original points dist will work the same for the HEI (Bat +)
- now put the plugs in and hook up the wires and fire it up
- set the total advance to around 32-36 degrees.
>>> SIDE NOTE <<<
I have never hook up the vacuum advance on HEI dist, when it is hooked up along with the built in mechanical advance you will see timing in excess of 45-50 degrees.
