I bought a used edelbrock torker 2 intake for a 454 that I am building for my boat but it looks like the fitting is off. Is this gap normal or is something wrong here? They're 049 heads if that helps.
IT looks like the intake is hitting the valve cover rail. This tells me that the heads have been shaved and/or the block has been decked a good bit. I had around .060" removed from my 049 heads to bring up the compression and the intake needed major work to fit.

Do you have a tall deck truck block and a regular 454 intake? There is a difference and parts won't interchange. I read about the intake being wider on a truck block when I found a smoking deal on a 454. It was a truck block. I passed it up.
If you did not figure this out yet, what you see is normal. That area is not open to the crankcase. And as far as looking like it hits the valve cover rail, most BBC intakes have a bevel cut on the bottom side to clear the v.c. rail. And if it were a tall deck, well, the tall deck is 1/4" taller, the gap of the intake is large. There are a few places the make intake spacers/adapters to put standard deck height intakes on tall decks. Be certain to use some thread sealer on the intake bolts to help keep the oil from creeping up past the bolts and onto the intake.
