Sbc information
The relevant numbers that are cast in like that are the casting number by the bellhousing. There are numbers under the timing cover sometimes that will tell you how much nickel is in with the iron, You can sometimes find a day/night shift casting.
The most important thing you can find is the stamping on the front passenger side deck surface. That gives you a code that says what vehicle it came in, the CID, sometimes the last few digits of the VIN. Sometimes this has been machined off if the block has been decked.
Later blocks have the displacement size cast on top of the bellhousing area.
