The 84 is carbed still correct?

Assuming I'm right, there are few bolt on that will be of much help, beyond the obvious, headers exh., good dual plane int., etc....

I don't remember for sure what year they started with the roller cams, but I believe it was in '87.

Sadly, the carbed cars were just not quick. And if emissions is an issue then mods will be limited.

Now if testing isn't an issue, than a head and cam change will go a long way in a hp increase.

I had a '80 'Bu wagon, that ran 14.40s with a small cam, .456 lift, and a slightly ported set of sm. chamber Z28 305 heads. The car was 3750 with me in it, a 3:73 gear, all stock suspension.

My point is you can make a 305 run DECENT, but you need to do some work.

305's aren't the most hot rod friendly motors. I rebuilt one and have 10:1 comp. ratio, good sized cam, rebuilt factory heads(with better springs), performer intake, holley 600 vacuum secondary carb, and block hugger shorty headers. It's at about 250 hp now so you can guess that your friend has less, unless he rebuilt his also(I'm guessing no). They really aren't worth it unless you get your parts dirt cheap or are trying to do something REALLY different.
Just my 2 cents.

Get a 350. They use the same parts but make more power 'cause they're bigger. A friend of mine raced with 305s in a B mod. the engines cost more then a 350 and had a huge toque difference.

Performer Intake
600cfm $220 Holley carb Vac. Secondary
7.5PSI fuel pressure
1-5/8" headers
3" single exhaust with good muffler
NX Plate Nitrous Kit
3.73 gear
good converter
Slicks

I had my 89 IROC going a sad 15.60 on motor(same as stock tpi actually) and 12.80 @ 108mph on a 150 hit. 13.00 on a 100 hit.

Needed some tuning N/A but I had it set nicely on the juice.

Your buddy's 1984 305 would probably be the LG4 or L69 model with a Q-Jet carb actually, not TPI or TBI.

My 86 Trans Am had the LG4 305, 165hp.
I installed an Edelbrock 7101 Intake and 4106 Carb with an Open Element Air cleaner.
Didn't dyno the car stock but it dyno'd 199RWHP after the swap.
Ran a 14.94 @ 92mph. Engine had a 133K miles on it.

Oh, about 6 months later I wanted to convert to TPI since the carb setup looks so dated.

I had an 84 Z at one point.

I would guess it has the LG4 which most had. 145hp 245tq, 8.8:1cr. Don't know any cam specs. E4MC carb, unless it's a cali edition then it has the other carb. Bout the only thing the engine is good for is a boat anchor. You don't have to worry bout emmisions in IL, so swap to a 350! I put the GMPP 350 H.O. in mine with an edlebrock Carb/intake had my tranny built and some 3.73's. she ran mid 13's 101-102 mphall day long in hot *** Phoenix AZ. Then put a 150 shot in and ran a few 12.1's @ 114-115 mph.

My old '99 Firebird with the 3.8 is about as quick.
