Default 427 SBC Question

I have been trying to figure out where to begin to build a 427 SBC. What block, casting numbers, size, etc. should I be looking for? What vehicles (generally speaking) should I be looking for which would hold this block?

any information on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I assume you are talking about a Gen I block. You are going to want to use an aftermarket block to get 427 out of a SBC. Dart or World Products are the two big vendors that make them. GM, I believe makes a Bowtie block that will go out that big.

If you are stuck on using a stock block, then find a 400, SBC. They typically came in trucks, Impalas, station wagons, and some chevelles from the early to mid '70's. A lot of people feel a 2 bolt is actually stronger than a 4 bolt main 400 block, depends on which theory you buy into and how much power you are trying to make. By the time you get done prepping one and making sure it is good, then you would be near the cost of a after market block. Jegs or Summit sells a bare block starting at $1800. You can find them on Ebay for a couple hundred cheaper. If you are not the engine building type of person, then I would look at getting a crate motor for that size of motor. They run anywhere from $7-12K depending on how wild you want to get. Remember speed costs money so.....a good 383 would be cheaper and its real easy to make 450hp and remain streetable.

Honestly, I have a 421 and unless you have mondo bukks for heads, then I wouldn't run over a 406.

383s are great all around motors, good TQ and HP. Plus a 350 blk is way easier to find.

I have a stock blk. No problems, just did a rebuild after 3 years, just a couple of scratches in the #3 main bearing.

i'd say stick with a 406.the 400 blocks are prone to crack between cylinders under pressure.a well built 406 should be able to make 550-600 streetable hp and 500 + lb ft of torque.i know= buy CTS05'S 18* heads and find some offset rockers, pistons and intake and have you a beast, just keep the revs 6500 or below.of course to take full advantage of the 18 * leap a healthy cam may be necessary.good luck whatever path you decide.
