400 sbc flywheel
I'm swamping in a 406 in my 69 chevelle. I ran into some trouble. Its a 168 teeth 11 inch and I have the 10.5 clutch set up. Wich doesnt bolt up. I need the smaller 153 teeth flywheel right and the 10.5 pressure plate will bolt up ? Also I was trying to save money and use my stock bell housing wich is the 403 so that doesnt fit over the 11 inch flywheel. .So I'm needing the 153 400 sbc flywheel ??? Any of ya guys have some advice Let me no. I geting excites to get this 406 on the road but man think I should of went with a automatic ! But love those 4 speeds Too. Thanks and time Andy Z2869302@msn.com

Well the 400 is an externally ballanced motor. My freind swaped flexplates due to a starter problem...I don't know if it will last any being that the flexplate blances the motor. You could very well be looking at a whole bottom end balance job. Then again I don't know if the flexplate is that specific to each motor.

400 flywheel
You have got to use the counter-weighted flywheel or something. When I built my 406 Chevy II years ago I bought a counter-weight adapter that bolted between the crank and flywheel. I am sure they are still available. I used the 153 tooth flywheel.

flywheel balance
First, was that 406 crankshaft balanced with the 168 tooth flywheel you have? Is there an offset weight cast into that flywheel or was the engine built internally balanced?
GM makes two 153 tooth light weight flywheels. One is neutral balance #14085720 the other is for externally balanced 454 #3963537. A good race shop should be able to match the 454 flywheel offset balance to your original flywheel if it is indeed externally balanced. If you find no offset weight on your 168 tooth flywheel, use the neutral balance GM flywheel.
Mcleod (714-630-2764) makes bolt on counterbalance weights for their flywheels. That's another option if you indeed need an externally balanced flywheel. I'm sure they can match the weight of your 168 tooth unit.

My $.02
I think you would be better off selling the 10.5" clutch and getting a 11" assembly. With the torque the 406 will make you'll likely find that you will be able to burn through the 10.5. I had a Centerforce Dual friction behind my ZZ4 and it was not enough. I smoked it several times before going to the 11" setup.
