Default New B...HELP!

so...im generally new to muscle cars. i been building and driving RX7's for a while. (rotary engine). my first car was a 72 Nova. i love all cars. but prefered the under dog. beating domestics with my 1.3 liter motor.not trying to start an arguement here. just introducing myself. anyways, now im planning a build on yet another 72 Nova. and i have been readin on here quite a bit. but i have a few questions. i figured i would ask them all and see wich ones i could get answered....a HUGE thanks in advance.

1. What has to be done to turn a stock 350 into a 383 stroker?
* What consists of a stroker kit?

2. What is the difference betweem 350 blocks and 383 blocks?

3. Gear ratios; 4.10 is shorter than 3.73, ok...but how do you get these ratios? what do they mean? also, do the transmissions effect the ratios?

4. Rearends; what does 12 bold, 10 bolt, or whatever mean? what is it refering to?

5. Cams and heads: Hydraulic roller cams, roller tip rockers, mechanical roller lifters, flat-tapped cam, and others....whats the difference?
* i.e. Would a flat-tapped cam work with roller lifters and/or rockers?

6. When you bore a block. Do you need a larger bore piston? or bigger piston rings?

7. Carburators...never really had true experience with them. is there a site i can learn more in depth about them. or some one can break it down for me.

Thanks...

P.S...if anyone has tips on building a 72 Nova. throw them this way.

1. Difference between a 350 and 383 is the stroke. With typical small blocks you're talking about going from a 3.48" stroke to a 3.75" stroke crankshaft. Hence why they call them "strokers". you're just increasing the radius of your crankshaft.

2. They're the same block.

3. You get these by changing your rear end gear ratio with a different gearset (just change the gears).

4. The 10 or 12 bolt refers to the number of bolts in the rearend housing and increases in strength with the higher number of bolts.

5. This refers to the lifter and cam lobe. You can mix and match certain cams with different lifters but I wouldn't reccomend it. Typical small block chevy stuff is usually flat tappet. Newer blocks run hydraulic roller.

6. Yes. Typically you want a piston bore .004" smaller than the cylinder bore. So on a 4.030" bore block the pistons will actually measure around 4.026" even though the manufacturer sells them as a 4.03" bore piston.

7. Look on Amazon.com or one of the many book sites. There is tons of info and way too much to dive into for your first tutorial.

And lastly but not least try and do a little research before posting here. There are about 9 billion websites that have information you need on the www. Go to howstuffworks.com and spend a couple hours of your time learning stuff over there. should give you a lot better base of knowledge.
