What would you guys recommend me doing...
I heard that all you have to do is...
get cyl 1 to TDC
pull the dist
install new one
make sure rotor and vaccum advance can are in same spot as old dist
put cap and wires other back on, connect the other wires...
try to start engine if it wont turn the dist 10 deg clockwise or counter which ever starts
then break out the timing light and time it
anything wrong there? or is what i read not right at all
All you need to do is pull your old cap off mark where the rotor is pointing to( I usuly turn the motor till the rotor points to the firewall then mark it ) pull the dist. out, as you pull it out the rotor will turn a little, remember which way it turns. now when you go to install the new one remember to start the rotor in about the same position that the old one ended up as you pulled it out, as you install the new one it will rotate the opp. way the old one did when you removed it. Now the dist. prob. wont go all the way down because as you pull out the old one the oil pump drive rod doesnt turn as much so get it started and then slowly rotate the motor as you push down on the dist. till it drops into the oil pump drive rod slot. This sounds like a lot of work but its not
Also with the HEI you will need a full 12 volts going to the dist. I belive the factory wire is a resitor wire, and make sure you hook up the wire from the starter sol. to the same 12 volt wire, so it will start when your cranking the starter, you should have two wires connected together on the + side of the coil, one of them should be from the starter sol.
then start and time it , it should be easy
